This is a great video about dub mixing and effects from one of the best dub producers out there today, Prince Fatty. When I first got into music making it was in college and I was lucky enough to have access to 1/4 tape machines and console mixers. This was also the time when Ambient Techno was making its first mark, with The Orb’s “Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld” and KLF’s “Chill Out“. In both cases the producers used mixing techniques imported from Jamaica’s great Dub Producers such as King Tubby and Mad Professor. In this video Prince Fatty talks about these techniques and some of the equipment. The takeaway for me, when I learned how to mix, is that there are no rules as long as it sounds good. The mixer is as much of an instrument as the keyboards, guitars, samplers, drum machines, turntables, etc. If it can make or pass sound it is an instrument. You can hear dub mixing techniques in entire genres, like Dub Techno, Minimal Techno, Dubstep, and Triphop. You can hear these influences all throughout my music too.
